SUMMARY

The next day, Jessica wakes up to another phone call from Mike informing her that another dead body has been found. In the bathroom, Jessica discovers that she has a black eye and a bleeding finger.

At the crime scene, Jessica recognizes the victim as her last sexual partner. Lieutenant Tong congratulates Jessica on her prediction that the killer would strike again.

Later, Lisa from the lab finds a stray drop of blood on the victim's body and announces that it may belong to the killer.

ANALYSIS

Although it is only her third day of work, it appears that Jessica has already acquired a reputation for getting wasted and sleeping in, judging from Mike's greeting as she groggily answers the phone:

Jessica: Shepard.
Mike: JESSICA

Surely, Mike knows Jessica well enough to imagine her hilariously startled and hungover reaction on the other end of the line; on the other hand, considering Mike's track record, it is entirely possible that he is enjoying her reaction from across the street with a pair of binoculars.

In fact, Jessica has developed more than a reputation -- she has physical injuries symbolizing her damaged (or "twisted") mental state. Additionally, of course, these injuries suggest the physical toll of all the whoring and murdering she seems to engage in during her frequent and extensive memory blackouts. The whoring and murdering, however, pales in comparison to what is obviously a serious case of alcoholism.

Fortunately for Jessica, she is supported by caring individuals like Mike, who responds to Jessica's concern ("I must have gotten wasted last night...") with a lecherous "Too bad I wasn't there!", clearly expressing his altruistic regret that he wasn't there for Jessica in her time of need. In fact, Mike is so concerned about his partner that he runs several red lights over the course of their conversation.

Lieutenant Tong also provides Jessica with some positive words, opting to see the brighter side of Jessica's prediction and praise her intuition rather than taking her into custody as an obvious suspect.
