SUMMARY

Casey is now working the concession stand at the ice rink, and deals with several angry children who advise her to get a different job. Gen, Nikki, and Tiffany also come up and place their food orders before also criticizing Casey's job performance. While waiting for their food, Nikki cracks a joke about Gen's weight, which she does not find funny. Casey upsets Gen even further by preparing her salad incorrectly, and annoys everyone else by excessively breaking down their totals.

Later, Casey attends her first beginner's class with a group of much younger students, taught by Tina and Gen. After reprimanding Gen for showing up late, Tina singles out Casey as "the physics whiz" and informs everyone that they will need butt cushions to practice jumping. As the class practices on the ice, Casey encounters a young girl who instantly hates her before explaining that their upcoming recital is a qualifying step toward the regionals.

After practice, Casey observes Teddy resurfacing the ice with a Zamboni; inspired, Casey glides out onto the ice to skate behind the machine, before Teddy notices and harshly scolds her. Casey apologizes, before falling on her butt so hard her cushion explodes. Teddy reveals that he is interested in physics because of cars, and Casey finally leaves the ice.

ANALYSIS

Operating the concession stand brings a host of new challenges into Casey's life, including the demands of four boys who put her in the awkward position of handling their big fat hot dogs. Casey's plain discomfort with this activity is understandable, especially considering the boys' harsh criticism of her technique ("Eww, you breathed on it!"). On the other hand, this demonstrates how far Casey is willing to go in the name of love as well as science -- a virtue which is clearly lost on the boy who flatly informs Casey "You shouldn't work here." Certainly, this comment seems rather harsh before one considers the possibility that these young men are, in fact, members of the production crew who didn't realize they were being filmed addressing Michelle Trachtenberg.

Unfortunately, Casey's discomfort is compounded with obvious guilt when Gen and her friends show up to find Casey with a large weiner in her hands. Given Gen's utter surprise to see her behind the counter (not to mention her total inability to do her job), this appears to be Casey's first day of work, but that doesn't stop Gen from demanding a special salad comprised of "just iceberg lettuce, a half cup of garbanzos, and a lemon wedge." This seems far from the friendliness Casey might have hoped for, until Gen turns back with a coy smile and adds, "Oh... and a quarter cup of cheese?" That the porno music from earlier does not reprise here is most likely due to a technical error.

It is therefore quite tragic when Casey ruins this small breakthrough by heaping an offensive amount of cheese onto Gen's salad. Additionally, Casey manages to aggravate Nikki in the following exchange:

Casey: Um, eh-it's $1.65, um, $2.35, eh-and $3.35. That's $7.30 total. [NOTE: It's $7.35.] Or, if you wanna split it the other way, eh-it's $1.75 eh-and $5.55.
Nikki: Whoa! You can keep it all if you just stop doing that.

It appears that Casey will have a tough time earning the respect of these experienced skaters (although in reality this may be another example of someone reacting naturally to Michelle Trachtenberg). If there is an upside to Casey's stressful new job, however, it is surely the fact that it pays $800 for a single shift, as evidenced by the fact that Casey is suddenly participating in Tina's novice class (even though she knows how to ice skate) and never works the concession stand again for the rest of the film.

Notably, even when invited to show off in her area of expertise, Casey manages to annoy anyone who interacts with her:

Tina: Casey, you're the physics whiz. What's that rule about what goes up?
Casey: Um, well, technically, it's that every particle attracts--
Tina: CASEY.

In fact, it is only surprising that Tina fails to react with an appropriate, "Whoa! You can keep it all if you just stop doing that." Even children immediately dislike Casey, as seen in her brief exchange with an angry little girl who helpfully explains the stakes for this portion of the film. (Incidentally, this girl is herself so annoying that Casey might have informed her, "Whoa! YOU can keep it all if you just stop doing that.")

After the session is over and everyone is leaving the rink, Casey STILL cannot do anything right, choosing to get back on the ice while the Zamboni is running. Indeed, no one could blame Teddy for losing his temper with Casey, especially when she must be approaching her limit for the number of time she is allowed to act wounded and stammer when people get mad at her. Nevertheless, this incident affords Casey and Teddy a valuable Meet Cute, punctuated by an explosion in Casey's pelvic region which symbolizes nothing less than a breakthrough in sexual identity -- freeing her to have romantic feelings for a male. Additionally, Casey is probably smart enough to realize that everyone else in this movie hates her, and if Teddy actually finds her antics endearing, it doesn't really matter if he's a man or a manta ray: she needs to marry him RIGHT NOW.
