SUMMARY

Casey meets with the parents of the other skaters, determined to get permission to film Gen, Nikki, and Tiffany practicing. Casey offers such evidence as a letter of explanation from Mr. Bast, her driver's license, and testimonials from parents whose children she babysat. The parents eventually give their permission, on the condition that she not distract them from training. Gen warns Casey not to upload pictures of her falling down on the school website.

Casey begins filming the skaters, walking onto the ice for a better view, until Teddy reprimands her for wearing street shoes on the ice, and gives her a pair of ice skates. Later, Gen's boyfriend Brian arrives at the rink, and Tina reprimands him for interrupting practice and bringing Gen a hamburger. After he is gone, Gen complains that she has no life. Tina replies that winners need to make sacrifices, and Gen angrily hints at her mother's scandalous past.

After working on her project for a while, Casey presents her work to Ann, who finds the project "a little dry." Casey approaches Tina and asks about taking some classes. Tina replies that a novice class is available for $800, to Casey's shock.

ANALYSIS

Immediately, we can see that Casey's talents are not restricted to math and ice skating; she is also a talented salesperson. In a chapter that opens with one skater's mom proclaiming "Absolutely not!", it is only 46 seconds later (with no elliptical edits) that all the parents are persuaded to let a complete stranger videotape their children. Indeed, who could argue with such charming earnestness, especially if they are smart enough to realize that saying yes is the only way to avoid sharing any more scenes with Michelle Trachtenberg?

And so Casey is officially allowed to film these girls as they rehearse their moves on the ice, and for the first time, Ice Princess thrusts the viewer into the point of view of Casey's camera. In this way, we are complicit in Casey's objectification of Gen, Nikki, and Tiffany, as we are forced to literally see them through Casey's voyeuristic gaze. Nevertheless, in the face of an actual male such as Teddy, Casey is reduced to hand-flailing apology when she is admonished for walking out on the ice.

Tina, on the other hand, is tough enough to confront a male herself, as she harshly compels Brian to leave her daughter alone. Here, we see that Casey is not the only one objectifying Gen, as Tina clearly sees Gen as more of a "winner" than her daughter; likewise, Tina is certainly not the only one interested in dispensing with this male intruder, and doesn't mind flexing her supremacy to do so. The balance of power shifts, however, when Casey continues to film Tina and Gen's argument; at this point, Casey is objectifying Tina objectifying Gen, as Gen objects to Tina's objectionable behavior. This is obviously so meaningful that you should think about it further on your own.

After spending an evening alone poring over a slow-motion video of Gen's exposed legs, Casey is ready to share her findings with Ann, who has possibly chosen a diner as their meeting location so she can finally realize her own dream of eating ice cream. Sadly, this appears to conclude the film's most intriguing subplot after competing with such secondary conflicts as "whether Gen gets to eat a cheeseburger" or "what Mr. Bast has against toasters."

Additionally, Ann offers two comments that resonate with the film's central lesbian storyline:

  1. She observes that Casey's conclusion is "just a little bit... dry," possibly envisioning more overhead sprinklers and/or bubble bath in Casey's eventual presentation
  2. She advises Casey, "Put more 'you' in it," a comment that may prove wildly out of place in a G-rated movie depending on how Casey chooses to interpret it

Seeking yet another way to make her science project more personal, Casey finally approaches Tina about taking some ice skating lessons, reasoning that her project might be improved if she could apply these physics principles herself. At first, it seems questionable that Tina is currently offering summer classes when the film's opening credits establish that (a) it is currently winter, and (b) Casey can already ice skate on (c) the immaculate ice rink conveniently located in her backyard. However, Ice Princess has also established Casey's exceptional intelligence, and after witnessing the earlier controversy regarding Gen's boyfriend, Casey is clearly smart enough to seize this opportunity to spend even more time at the rink with Gen, while Brian unuspectingly stays away to avoid Tina.

ARTIFACTS
Shortly after beginning coverage of Ice Princess, The Slow Roll was contacted by one of the adults present in the room when Casey asked permission to film their daughters.

This person refused to be identified, but did provide a copy of the document Casey handed out as an explanation from her science teacher.
