| SUMMARY |
Michael Ellis leads Missy Elliott through his office, explaining how sexy Katrina is going to make her next video. Missy responds with confusion, prompting Katrina to demonstrate some of her moves. Unfortunately, Missy is unimpressed, demanding that Michael get Honey Daniels, and leaves in a huff. Back in the Bronx, Michael locates Honey walking down the street and apologizes for his behavior at the party. Honey guesses that Michael's repentance is somehow tied to a dive in his career, which he admits. When Michael offers to buy Honey the dance studio, she turns him down, informing him that she would rather get the money on her own terms. Meanwhile, Benny has rejoined rehearsal with the other neighborhood kids, having been released from incarceration. After Benny shows off some of the moves he has been teaching the other kids, Honey reminds the kids that they only have a few days until the dance benefit. |
| ANALYSIS |
As Honey gathers steam towards its upcoming climax, it becomes clear that its main character will face no more hardship in her life. Despite having choreographed just three music videos in her career, and being fired from her last job by a major director thanks to her poorly conceived and executed idea, Honey Daniels is sought after by no less than Missy Elliott, a hip-hop superstar with whom Honey has never interacted. Possibly, Missy has made some faulty assumptions based on the fact that Honey's rise to fame is already the subject of a motion picture. Nevertheless, Michael seems confident unveiling Katrina to an unsuspecting Missy, who in turn immediately disrespects Katrina to her face just for not being Honey. In fact, Honey's absence is awfully conspicuous, given that Honey was clearly already signed for this job and personally requested by Missy Elliott; evidently, it is of such paramount importance for Michael to work with a choreographer who will have sex with him that his A-list client's wishes went out the window the instant Katrina gave it up. Perhaps even more remarkable, however, is Missy's noisy disgust with Katrina's vulgar dance moves, as they appear indistinguishable from Honey's. Meanwhile, as if showing off her sunny dominance over time and space, Honey sabotages her own good fortune just to see everything work out perfectly anyway. When Michael finds her in the Bronx, he offers the following apology: "What I did, the way I handled things, was uncool. And I am so sorry. And I want to make it up to you." It is important to consider that while his behavior may have been reprehensible, it took him only a few days to realize the error of his ways, and while he has some professional stake in mending this relationship as well, that is in fact how business works. And in response, Honey rejects Michael once again, apparently for sport. To be sure, Honey is someone who has willingly anointed herself personally responsible for the well-beings of over a dozen neighborhood kids -- kids who have already been let down by Honey once, and have only recently learned to depend on her again. Now, with the fate of her Centah hinging entirely on the success of one dance benefit, Honey decides that this would be a perfect time to put herself first: not only is she cocky enough to assume that Michael is only sorry because a major artist threatened to walk without her, Honey decides it is more important to say "I told you so" than to act in the best interest of her tiny dancers and accept Michael's offer. And so the audience witnesses Honey's ultimate act of betrayal, as she gambles with the neighborhood kids' futures and not her own, valuing her stubborn pride over the opportunity to prevent children from dealing drugs. Though she must be credited for at least doing so out of earshot this time, it is a chilling piece of character development that Honey never feels remorse for her actions -- despite how devastated her young friends would be if they ever learned that she could have used her amazing connections to benefit them, and chose not to. |
