SUMMARY

Honey arrives at the Centah to find it temporarily closed, due to a burst pipe inside. As the building inspector takes notes, Honey's mom expresses skepticism that anyone will be able to fix it, speculating that the whole Centah may get shut down.

That night, Honey and Chaz stroll through the Bronx discussing the sad plight of kids in the hood. Chaz takes Honey to his barbershop, where they continue discussing what happens to kids who sell drugs. Eventually, Honey and Chaz share a passionate first kiss.

ANALYSIS

Thus far, Honey has demonstrated an expert series of setups and payoffs, allowing the viewer to follow its developing plot. Some examples include:

SETUPS PAYOFFS
Honey wants to dance
Honey wants to become famous
Honey wants Benny to stay in school
Honey dances
Honey becomes famous
Benny stays in school

At this point in the film, however, the filmmakers decide that the audience is on board with Honey's central tenets, and let the viewer fill in more blanks than usual.

When Honey first arrives at the Centah, a sizable crowd has already gathered outside, presumably comprised of Bronx citizens impatient to get inside and engage in some drug-free recreation. It seems the whole neighborhood has been thrown off by this unexpected closure, and their confusion is certainly understandable, as it has never been suggested that the Centah might be in some kind of structural trouble. While it is true that one girl slipped on a puddle in an earlier scene, the possibilities were left open that (a) Honey had set a trap for her, (b) this girl was uncoordinated, or (c) some combination of the two.

Honey beckons Benny to join him as she sidesteps a barrier and darts past a city official, as well as a sign reading "CLOSED BUILDING, DO NOT ENTER." The city official turns to object, but gladly obliges when he sees it's Honey; once again, instant public adoration of Honey pays off, also serving to reassure her that B.B.'s surly attitude was a fluke (perhaps until she remembers Raymond's mom's surly attitude and starts questioning her universe all over again). As Honey approaches her mom inside the building, we notice that despite a supposedly disastrous burst pipe, the entire Centah is bone dry inside.

The next scene also suggests some overlooked yet crucial information: Honey and Chaz are now apparently dating. This is quite remarkable, considering that the last time Honey and Chaz interacted she turned him down flat three times in a row, also implying a fourth declination. It is understandable that Honey may have taken pity on Chaz, now that he has nowhere to play basketball while teammates shout at him for ogling her. However, as they're walking, Honey attempts to escape by claiming she lives in another direction, but Chaz grabs her back and calls her "sexy," prompting her to respond, "Stop with that."

Chaz continues trying to win Honey's heart by giving a heartfelt speech about acquiring this barbershop, and how he is better off than B.B. because being happy is more important than having money. Honey is unsure how to respond, as she clearly loves making money, having money, and spending money. In fact, as the naturally euphoric individual she is, Honey is unable to conceive of a dichotomy between happiness and money. Cleverly, she chooses to avoid the issue by taking one for the team and making out with Chaz.
