SUMMARY

The next morning, Gina wakes Honey from a dead sleep by pulling open the curtains and insisting that she take her shopping for a birthday dress. Honey groggily informs Gina that she worked until 6 AM and is too exhausted, offering her instead a fancy designer dress from last night's shoot. Gina indignantly says she wants nothing to do with Honey's sweaty leftovers, but takes the dress anyway.

Later, Honey finds Raymond sitting on her stoop, this time despondent that Benny has been missing from school since their mom's boyfriend hit Benny in the face. As Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama" swells on the soundtrack, Honey and Raymond search the Bronx in the rain for Benny, eventually spotting him in a Chinese restaurant.

Honey tries talking to Benny, but he reminds her that she hasn't been around and doesn't even teach her dance class at the Centah anymore. In turn, Honey offers to let Benny help out on her next video shoot if he goes to school all week. Benny enthusiastically accepts this deal.

ANALYSIS

While it is certainly a staple of the dance movie for the main character to face a lack of support, it is quite unexpected to see this lack of support spring from the sassy best friend who believed in the main character all along. Here, Gina's endorsement of Honey deteriorates the instant she realizes Honey won't blow her paycheck on her birthday dress. Perhaps even more surprising, however, is the fact that Gina has once again appeared in Honey's apartment without being let in, as they still do not live together.

By this point, it is apparent that Gina's cherished friendship with Honey has been an elaborate ploy to score designer clothing. Although she delivers a perfunctory comment that Honey deserves overtime pay for working until 6 AM, Gina seems to feel differently about Honey's entitlement to a good night's sleep, as she abuptly throws open the curtains in order to roust Honey, drag her out of bed, and blow her paycheck on a birthday dress for herself. In response to Honey's alternate offering, while any supportive friend would be thrilled that doing something nice for Gina's birthday was still on Honey's mind during such a demanding day of work, Gina regards her mission as a failure and stomps off with a consolation prize.

In keeping with the efficient progression of Honey's life, she almost literally stumbles upon the catalyst for her next montage, as Raymond explains the situation with Benny. The ensuing montage is such an emotional low point for Honey and Raymond, in fact, that nature itself senses their sorrow and rain washes over the pair as they walk. Fortunately, the situation is not grim enough for Honey and Raymond to still be wet a short while later, as they coincidentally find Benny at a place called Luen Fat Sea Food & B.B.Q. Restaurant. Interestingly, the Chinese symbols above these words translate to "In a city of 8 million people, you'll probably find whoever you're looking for by wandering on foot."

This clip ends just as it began, with Honey going out of her way to help someone who throws it back in her face and demands more, more, more: Benny informs Honey that her help is meaningless, since she's never around and no longer teaches at the Centah. This is despite the fact that Benny has never regarded her class at the Centah as anything besides mockable fodder, and also the fact that Honey took an entire day to take Raymond for a haircut and walk him home. In fact, if Honey did have all the free time in the world, she would have spent today dress shopping with Gina; Honey's busy new schedule is the best thing that could have happened for these kids.

Honey cunningly trades on the very thing upsetting Benny -- her success -- to manipulate him into liking her again. It is unsurprising that Honey would take this moment to set up another special appearance by a popular hip-hop artist, in this case Tweet. Even Tweet, however, would have the good sense to feel patronized by Raymond's double-take: "The Tweet?"
