| SUMMARY |
Kelley is resting in bed when Robin bursts in and accuses him of killing Ralph, her pet mouse. Robin tearfully informs Kelley that she hates him, and storms out of the room. Later, Samantha and Jen walk out of their house. Upon gazing at Kelley's sweaty, shirtless body, Samantha abandons her sister to flirt with Kelley and arrange a date for that evening. |
| ANALYSIS |
So far, with the exception of fetching him a sandwich as a reward for being rude to her family, Samantha has not explicitly made a pass at Kelley, although she is clearly intrigued by him. Unfortunately, Kelley's "bad boy" persona has a more negative effect on Jasper's little sister, as Ralph's murder obviously devastates her. Robin's distress is certainly understandable, as is the viewer's as they realize that Kelley is capable of stamping out the life of someone else's pet and tossing it in the garbage without a speck of remorse. But Samantha is powerless against Kelley's appeal, drawn to him as though with a tractor beam when she spies him sauntering around the construction site without a shirt on. Samantha loses touch with the outside world so thoroughly, she barely notices her open-mouthed sister as she stumbles towards Kelley's greased-up physique. In fact, between the body oil and the waxed torso, it seems apparent that Kelley is taking a break from his sentence to pose for a "Men of Mable's Table" wall calendar. Samantha's opening line, "My sister hates you" (or as Leelee Sobieski pronounces it, "My sister hits you") acknowledges the controversy of Kelley's presence in Putnam; interestingly, however, Samantha doesn't seem to share her sister's negative opinion of Kelley. She reports that Jen only hates Kelley on principle, but if she was interested in hating Kelley on a personal level, she might consider any of his accomplishments so far in the film:
Added to this list is Kelley's destruction of Robin's pet mouse, which is never explained as an accident or anything nearly as innocent; instead, Samantha mocks her boyfriend's little sister's heartbreak for the sake of the following crude flirtation:
Interestingly, Samantha never bothers to ask who Ralph is, and may as well labor under the notion that Kelley has terminated a human being and doesn't feel the slightest bit guilty. Apparently delighted at the prospect of getting involved with a psychopath, and demonstrating her own sociopathic disregard for the fact that she currently has a boyfriend who is probably working 10 feet away, Samantha decides to make an evening date at the baseball diamond with Kelley and his plastic nipples. |
| JUDGE MADDICK SAYS... |
"Don't kill mice! When they come back to haunt you, it can be awfully scurry! Get it? Like scary! I sentence you to laugh immediately!" |
