SUMMARY

Under cover of darkness, Kelley and his two friends sneak down the fire escape and cruise off campus in Kelley's sports car.

Meanwhile, at a diner called "Mable's Table," a group of local teens eat and chat merrily. Jasper (Hartnett) and Samantha watch their friends carve their names into the "Lovers Wall." Jasper wants to carve their names as well, but Samantha is distracted by her sister Jen's (Elaine Hendrix) request that she cover her shift at the diner.

Kelley and friends conspicuously arrive at Mable's Table and attempts to flirt with Samantha as she takes their order. Jealous, Jasper starts a fight with Kelley that gets both of them thrown out of the diner.

Kelley hurls one last insult at Jasper before tearing off in his car. Jasper gives chase, and the two cars engage in a high-speed drag race that ends with Jasper's car smashing into a gas station and blowing up Mable's Table.

As Mable's Table burns to the ground, Jasper is put in a police car while Officer Cavanaugh (Bruce Greenwood) informs Kelley that his wife's mother is Mable. When Kelley responds with insolence, he is handcuffed and taken into custody as well.

ANALYSIS

Elite private schools exist in many small American towns, and this kind of "town-gown" relationship often creates tension between the two. In some cases, the rift between socioeconomic classes can be explosive; so explosive, in fact, that their meeting in this clip culminates in an actual explosion.

Kelley, Charlie, and Steve descend from their dormitories using an unlikely fire escape traversing the entire side of the building, leading directly past the principal's window. This journey downward, and the boys' subsequent joyride off campus, represents their entrance into a different world. Not only is this small town a different world, it's a world that evidently recognizes Kelley specifically, as the diner's activity comes to a complete standstill the instant he enters. Alternatively, perhaps the town is just surprised that Kelley magicked his car out of the motor pool just to crash a diner.

Apparently, however, ordering food at a local diner is the most reckless action Kelley has ever done, judging from his challenging glance around the room before taking his seat, and bad-boy style of ordering by asking Samantha how she makes ice cream. The notion of class distinction is reinforced once again as we learn that rich people like Kelley pronounce "ice cream" with undue emphasis on the word "cream"; this is nothing, however, compared to Samantha's pronunciation of every word as if her jaw is wired shut.

Despite Kelley's bad attitude and plastic-like exterior, Samantha demonstrates her opportunistic side as she leans forward to show off her breasts and warns Kelley not to check out her backside when she walks away. While many teenage girls in small towns dream of getting away and making something of their lives, Samantha seems unique in her brazenness in full view of her boyfriend. This interaction is not lost on Jasper, inspiring him to taunt Kelley by calling him "Richie Rich." Interestingly, this put-down doubles as helpful exposition in case the viewer was still unclear regarding Kelley's financial situation.

Indeed, Kelley and Jasper are so different, they appear to shop at completely different sections of Old Navy; such irreconcilable differences lead to an altercation in which Samantha throws both of them out of Mable's Table. Outside, Kelley's dramatic streak continues, as it appears he has gone to the trouble of backing up his car for the sole purpose of pulling up again, so he can insult Jasper and drive away cackling. Kelley's insult is notable for including the term "fantasy file," which is just weird.

As Kelley and Jasper engage in their fateful drag race, the plastic texture of Chris Klein's face reaches unsettling proportions, as we realize that the only creature in fact or fiction Klein resembles is Gigolo Joe from Artificial Intelligence. This is an important motif to look out for in Here On Earth, in case viewers may want to compete with one another to see who can resist the Uncanny Valley effect compelling them to sprint in the opposite direction of the screen.

Finally, it is Jasper's car which ends up plowing into the gas station and setting Mable's Table on fire. In fact, it is absolutely amazing that Jasper and his friends are able to drive directly through a cluster of exploding gasoline pumps without suffering any visible damage to their car, not to mention their bodies. When Samantha and other diners look out the window to see what all the commotion is about, the viewer reasonably expects to see charred bones raining from the sky; instead, Jasper and friends ably exit their vehicle and watch everyone in town escape the restaurant in safety.
