SUMMARY

Kelley visits Samantha in the hospital and asks what he can do for her. Samantha says the disease has already spread and she's going to die. Kelley accuses her of giving up, to which she replies, "I'm going to live, just not as long as you."

In a montage, construction on Mable's Table continues, while Samantha lies in the hospital and Kelley gazes sadly at a black and white photograph.

Later, Jasper visits Samantha in the hospital. Samantha apologizes for "that night," and Jasper apologizes for not being a very good friend. They agree that they love each other and hug.

ANALYSIS

In any relationship, arguments can be a natural byproduct of two people growing together; as we've seen, Kelley and Samantha's fight at the bus station only brought them closer. However, sometimes arguments can signal the rapid deterioration of a relationship that was never meant to exist in the first place. In this clip, Samantha makes an important decision: she would rather forgo treatment and die than continue to date Kelley. Interestingly, this is the first time the audience can relate to Samantha's behavior in any way.

Between the last clip and this one, it appears Samantha has realized that her sister, her parents, her friends, and her boyfriend were all totally right about Kelley; now that osteosarcoma has spread to her liver, the ever-opportunistic Samantha spies a chance to cleanly and finally get out of this situation. Certainly, there can be no other explanation for a teenage girl declining another two years of life in favor of dying immediately because "it's not worth it."

Of course, Kelley does not disappoint with his reaction; at first, his indignance seems reasonable, shouting at Samantha, "You're just gonna DIE?!" In fact, it is only surprising that Here On Earth lacks a montage of Mr. and Mrs. Cavanaugh, Jen, Jasper, Pete, Vanessa, and Judge Maddick screaming the same thing at Samantha for robbing them of what little time they could still spend with her. But Kelley takes the cake when he turns to look out the window and sulk, fancying himself the true victim of this whole situation.

On the other hand, Samantha's motives are certainly worth a closer look, as she responds with yet another one of her trademark fake-outs: "I'm going to live..." followed by an agonizing pause. In this pause, the viewer is left to imagine various possibilities of what she might say next, including:

  • "...not with you, Kelley. I'm moving in with Jasper."
  • "...I'm really not sick at all. I just wanted to see if you cared."
  • [dies]

Nevertheless, Samantha's conclusion, "...just not as long as you," is even harsher as a statement of fact and the ultimate guilt trip.

Jasper's visit to the hospital demonstrates that he has not undergone any recent personal growth either, as he apparently believes a nice picnic is the one thing that will cure Samantha's disease and undo the fact that the last time they talked, she was dumping him at the bus station. In fact, Jasper nearly achieves actual sainthood when he waves off Samantha's weak apology by saying, "No, I'm sorry. I haven't been a very good friend." Samantha's response that Jasper will always be her best friend is notable for two reasons:

  1. It's not much of a commitment when she's going to die next week
  2. If Here On Earth depicts how Samantha treats her best friend, no wonder Jasper is willing to humiliate himself to stay on her good side

MEMORABLE SCREENCAPS
"Hey, I brought you a big basket of karma!"
"So... too soon for that karma joke, huh?"
JUDGE MADDICK SAYS...
"Relationships are hard work! It's probably even harder when someone is dying on purpose to get away from you!"
