SUMMARY

At home, Samantha receives a phone call and lies to her mother about who it was. Meanwhile, Kelley makes peace with Robin by offering her a new pet mouse.

Later, Pete arrives at Jasper's house with Samantha in the backseat. Pete makes fun of Kelley for not having a date, as Jasper gets in the car and exchanges awkward smiles with Samantha.

ANALYSIS

Although Samantha has revealed past knee injuries and been to the knee doctor since Here On Earth began, as far as the viewer is concerned, she is a totally healthy young woman; it would certainly be a plot hole if anything bad happened to her after expressing aspirations of antique shopping and medical school. Here, once again, Samantha displays her confidence that nothing remarkable is about to happen by swinging her arm to answer the telephone so wildly, it is clear that she doesn't have a care in the world. Since actions speak louder than words, it seems undeniable that this movie will have a happy ending.

However, this mysterious phone call changes everything:

Samantha: Hello?
[inaudible]
Samantha: Yes, this is Samantha.
[inaudible]
Samantha: Hi.
[inaudible]
Samantha: Well, did he say what it was about?
[inaudible]
Samantha: Okay. Sure, I'll tell them Tuesday.

Despite the fact that we don't hear or see the unidentified caller, we still gain the following crucial information:

  • Samantha's name is Samantha
  • Something about Tuesday

When Samantha's mom asks who was on the phone, she lies that it was "somebody selling something," suggesting that the phone was not supposed to ring in this scene, and Leelee Sobieski just spoke to a frantic Michael Seitzman trying to FedEx over some rewrites as soon as humanly possible.

Meanwhile, Kelley has decided to make it his top priority to win over young Robin, and seeks to accomplish this by waiting for her to enter the room and emerging from the shadows like Nosferatu. Despite the physical resemblance, however, Kelley's intentions are much more honorable as he presents Robin with a new mouse she pronounces "Ralph, Jr."; perhaps if anything unexpectedly tragic should happen to Samantha in the near future, Robin would suggest to the mourning Cavanaughs that they acquire a new slightly masculine daughter and name her "Samantha, Jr."

On the other hand, it certainly appears that the citizens of Putnam are exceptionally forgiving, as Pete has expunged his memory of the fact that he caught Samantha cheating on his friend at the general store, and has somehow managed to put Samantha in his backseat without putting a rock on the accelerator and sending the vehicle off a cliff.

JUDGE MADDICK SAYS...
"That was me on the phone with Samantha! I was reminding her that if she doesn't build character by Tuesday, I'll make her build a diner too!"
