SUMMARY

Samantha locates Jasper in a shed. Jasper insists that their love is real, as opposed to Samantha's new relationship with Kelley. Jasper also reminds Samantha of the upcoming 4th of July dance.

Later, Kelley and Samantha bound through the woods, stopping to admire a picturesque view of the river. Samantha invites Kelley to the 4th of July dance, before remembering that she is supposed to go with Jasper. Kelley suggests they get together after the dance, but Samantha is going to Cape Cod with Jasper's family. Kelley sarcastically advises Samantha not to worry about it, since their relationship isn't serious anyway.

ANALYSIS

As Samantha confronts Jasper for the first time since her brazen infidelities, the dramatic tension is almost unbearable; after witnessing Samantha getting it on with the only guy in town everyone hates, the viewer can only speculate as to Jasper's simmering fury. Certainly, we remember how enraged Syd was upon finding out his girlfriend was cavorting with another man in London ; in contrast to London, however, Samantha doesn't seem to have any regrets besides having to deal with her boyfriend before Kelley could think of more pet names for her genitals.

Surprisingly, Jasper does not seem angry at all, but eager to convince Samantha that their love is real. This scene is crucial to Here On Earth, as it effectively introduces Jasper's only character trait: what a doormat he is. As Samantha walks in on him fixing something mechanical, the best he can do is vaguely allude to his hurt feelings:

Samantha: How bad is it? Is it fixable?
Jasper: I don't know. It's pretty bad.

While it initially seems that a tremendous amount of awkwardness has been avoided by Jasper's non-reaction to his girlfriend's cheating ways, it all comes rushing to the fore when he nevertheless pleads with Samantha to attend the 4th of July dance with him, which is pretty embarrassing for everyone involved, especially the audience.

When Jasper arrives at the construction site, it appears that Kelley has undergone at least a small amount of character development, having found his own way to Mable's Table rather than bumming a ride off the guy whose girlfriend's breasts he's naming. In contrast, Samantha doesn't mind getting comfortable nearby to observe Kelley and Jasper and write in her journal, raising the uncomfortable possibility that this entire situation is a cruel psychology experiment for Samantha to take notes on. Meanwhile, Kelley's perceived newfound sensitivity terminates at the moment he shoots Samantha a "How YOU doin'?" look right in front of Jasper.

If Samantha's treatment of men seems reprehensible, however, at least it can be said that she treats them equally, as demonstrated after she tells Kelley all about the 4th of July dance. While it seems inappropriate enough that she eagerly sets Kelley up to ask her out, Samantha truly outdoes herself when she suddenly feigns confusion and "remembers" that she agreed to go with Jasper. To the careful viewer, this moment marks Samantha's crucial realization that, as long as she's going to bite the dust at the end of this film, she might as well play all the mind games she wants without suffering any consequences.
