SUMMARY

For nearly three minutes and fifty seconds, the camera charts Drew Baylor's progress as he pilots an automobile to Elizabethtown. Drew travels through greater Louisville and into more rural surroundings, and calls Uncle Dale to let him know he should arrive by 2 PM.

Unfortunately, Drew loses his way despite Claire's directions, enormous road signs, and a map. Failing to get off at Exit 60B, Drew traverses the countryside in one direction and then the other, eventually pulling over to vent his frustration by pounding the steering wheel and repeatedly howling, "DID I MISS 60B?!"

Drew eventually arrives in Elizabethtown, where throngs of chipper townspeople come running out of the woodwork to point Drew's car in the direction of the funeral home. Upon reaching his destination, Drew is greeted fondly by his cousin Jessie, who hugs him aggressively and tells him, "This loss will be met by a hurricane of love."

ANALYSIS

Although seemingly uneventful and relatively short, this clip is among the most significant in Elizabethtown and provides several insights crucial to understanding the remainder of the film.

Drew's journey into the countryside parallels his journey towards finding himself, marked by a descent into surroundings more simple and dull. When speaking to Uncle Dale, for example, Drew once again pronounces "Louisville" with a long "e," discounting the advice Claire so painstakingly administered. Given his overall inability to learn anything, it is curious that everyone around Drew seems to consider him bright or capable. Alternatively, Drew's mispronunciation could represent an unconscious desire to eliminate all traces of the in-flight scarecrow from his memory forever.

Notably, this clip marks Drew's first display of emotion in Elizabethtown -- not in response to losing $1 billion dollars, deciding to kill himself, or finding out his father is dead, but missing a freeway exit. In fact, Drew loses control to such an extent that he must pull over and throw a tantrum; perhaps even more surprising than Drew's rage is the unveiling of Orlando Bloom's second facial expression in 24 minutes of screen time. Next time, Drew might try looking for Exit 60B right after any of the following: Exit 61, Exit 59, or Exit 60A.

Our eventual first glimpse of Elizabethtown reveals a small town both idyllic and chilling. This Rockwellian dreamscape, observed by Drew from the inside of his car, is replete with American flags, bucolic churches and storefronts, and evidently, not much to do. Throngs of townspeople appear to have anticpated the exact moment of Drew's arrival, suggesting either collective intelligence or a remarkable town PA system; this is especially ominous given Drew's lack of punctuality.

Drew offers a mild smile at the Elizabethtownies' display of unity, even gesturing to himself to confirm that this outpouring of emotion is, in fact, directed towards him. The sight of two boys enthusiastically hailing the arrival of Späsmotica's designer raises the question of how many teenagers actually idolize footwear (that hasn't been released yet), as well as recognize shoe designers on sight.

After the world's most macabre child waves a grieving son gleefully through the gates of a funeral home, Drew's cousin Jessie proves that not only does flagrant exposition run in the Baylor family, but if possible, he is even more economical about it than Heather.

MEMORABLE SCREENCAPS
Did Claire miss 60B? Yes. By 34 exits and B.
The town pays loving homage to a near-stranger who hasn't lived within 2,000 miles of Kentucky for almost 30 years.
