| SUMMARY |
After giving a pep talk to a classroom full of children, Tom Lone is surprised to see Patience waiting at the door with a cup of coffee labeled "Sorry." While the children are at recess, Tom and Patience get to know each other better before playing a game of one-on-one basketball. Patience wins easily. Back at Hedare Cosmetics, Laurel examines Drina's photos. When a staff member informs her that George will be at the factory all afternoon, Laurel slurs her awareness of George's affair with Drina. Laurel sees the two of them out the window and shatters a glass with her bare hand. At home, Patience is eating tuna fish out of a can when Sally calls to express excitement at Patience's further involvement with Tom. When Sally hangs up, she hits on a nearby doctor. |
| ANALYSIS |
While Sally's instant enthusiasm for Tom as a life partner for Patience seems initially unsettling, in this clip he demonstrates his worthiness of Sally's admiration. Going out his way to inspire young children is noble enough, but it also becomes clear that Tom has chosen a particularly dangerous school, as the children brush off his words and repeatedly beg to handle his gun, or at least watch him fire it. Obviously, their insatiable hunger for violence has necessitated his line of work. Interestingly, Tom and Patience both enjoy advertising what lousy companions they make, considering the fact that Patience's best friend deemed her "fun-deficient," while all of Tom's partners have quit just to get away from him. This crackling sexual tension does not go unnoticed by the children, who waste no time challenging Tom and Patience to some one-on-one basketball; indeed, the only thing children enjoy more than facilitating romance between grown-up strangers is spending their recess watching other people play basketball instead of doing it themselves. The old Patience would probably not have accepted this challenge at all, and she certainly never would have showboated by leaping off a wall, waving her ass in the air, and performing a slam dunk to score the single point required for victory in whatever game they're playing. As Patience ends up straddling Tom suggestively in the middle of the playground, the children uncomfortably demand their ball back; however, it is unclear whether their discomfort stems from the bizarre mating dance they just witnessed, or the nauseating camerawork. Additionally, any fears that Patience's personal hygiene had improved now that she is Catwoman are laid to rest, as we see her devouring tuna fish with her fingers straight from the can. This kind of disgusting behavior, including the disregard with which she gets tuna juice all over the telephone, might be seen as another side-effect of becoming Catwoman if not for the fact that she was disgusting and never changed her clothes before anything special happened to her. Meanwhile, Sally continues receiving absolutely no treatment at St. Catwoman's hospital, leaving with no recourse but to monopolize the phone at reception to call Patience and gab about boys, because that's apparently more interesting than the fact that she's dying and no one knows why. In fact, all it takes is for Patience to utter the words "next time" to conjure unparalleled glee from Sally: "'Next time'? I LOVE this guy!" Now those are some low standards. |
